Getting Started With Therapy: What To Expect

Once your first appointment is scheduled, you’ll receive a welcome email inviting you to register with TherapyNotes, our secure client portal. Keep an eye on your inbox (and maybe your spam folder, just in case it’s feeling rebellious that day).

Through TherapyNotes, you’ll be able to complete:

  • Your contact and demographic info

  • Insurance details (if applicable)

  • All new client forms and intake paperwork

  • Change, cancel or update your appointment

  • Send HIPAA compliant messages to your therapist

  • Pay and or update payment

  • Telehealth Sessions

Your First Appointment

Your initial appointment is called an intake or assessment session—think of it as laying the groundwork for our work together.

During this session, we’ll:

  • Review your intake forms and initial assessments

  • Talk about your reasons for seeking therapy

  • Explore your treatment history and what’s helped (or not helped) in the past

  • Begin to identify your goals, needs, and hopes for therapy

If there are other professionals or loved ones you'd like me to collaborate with—such as a primary care doctor, past therapist, or that one supportive friend who “gets it”—we’ll need a signed release for each of them. Feel free to bring their contact information with you.

I know starting therapy can feel like a big step, and I’m here to make the process as smooth, safe, and supportive as possible. If you have any questions before we meet, don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to beginning this journey with you.
